Root Canal Treatment

Suffering from pain and discomfort? Root canal treatment ensures any infection can be removed and prevents the tooth being extracted.

Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve supply of a tooth becomes infected. In the early stages you may not feel any pain, but the dentist will be able to identify areas of infection when they take x-rays. If left the infection can spread through the tooth and can cause an abscess, which is painful.

To complete the root canal treatment, the dentist will first numb your tooth using a local anaesthetic and will then remove the infected pulp and drain any abscess. The root canal will then be thoroughly disinfected before a filling is used to seal the tooth and prevent further infections. It is advised that a crown is fitted following root canal treatment to help strengthen and protect the tooth. If root canal treatment is not completed, the infection will spread and in the long term it is likely the tooth will need to be extracted.

    Root Canal

If you’ve ever suffered from toothache you know that it is no laughing matter. It can cause discomfort, pain, swelling and can be the first sign of a deeper, more worrying problem.

Luckily help is at hand and we can give you the treatments you need to put a smile back on your face.

    What causes toothache?

Toothache can be caused by many things, but normally it is a result of a tooth having a diseased nerve.

    How can it be stopped?

This kind of toothache can be stopped – and the tooth itself saved – by a specialised procedure called ‘endodontic treatment’, more commonly known as ‘root canal’ surgery.

Through this technique, the affected tooth is anaesthetised and a small hole is cut in the top. Through this opening, the diseased contents are then removed and the root canal is cleaned and enlarged. This is then filled and sealed. A crown is usually necessary afterwards to prevent the tooth from cracking.
