Root canal treatment is undertaken when the nerve supply of a tooth is infected. At first there may be no pain but we can identify problem areas using X-Rays. If left untreated, or unnoticed, the infection will spread to the tooth and possibly cause an abscess which is incredibly painful.
To resolve the problem your tooth will be numbed using a local anaesthetic . A small hole is made in the top and this is used to remove the infected tissue and contents. If required we will then drain the abscess. The root canal is then thoroughly disinfected and filled to seal it and prevent further infection.
We always advise the fitting of a crown afterwards to strengthen and protect the tooth. Failure to carry out this process properly will cause the infection to spread and as a result compromise the tooth requiring to to be extracted.
