Are you missing several teeth? Dentures can help to return your smile to full health

A denture is a removable replacement for one or several missing teeth. There are two main types of denture – complete dentures replace all the teeth on either your upper or lower jaw, where as partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Dentures can be made in a variety of different materials acrylic, metal or Valpast and the dentist will be able to advise on the best material to meet your needs.

It will take 4-5 appointments to craft your custom-made dentures, spaced a week to 10 days apart. This allows the dentist to try the dentures in at each stage and make any necessary adjustments, to ensure the best possible fit. Although it is possible to repair and reline your dentures, over time your gums may shrink and change shape so it is advised that your dentures will need to be replaced every 5-7 years. This ensures that you always have the best possible fit from your dentures with the minimum discomfort.

Benefits of Dentures

  • Dentures can provide a fresh start, giving you a full set of natural looking, custom made teeth.
  • Dentures allow you to eat a full and varied diet, eating and chewing comfortably without fear of pain or discomfort.
  • Dentures can help to fill out your cheeks, giving your face the support it needs to keep you looking younger for longer.

If you lose several teeth you may need to consider dentures to restore your smile to its former glory. But what options are there and how can you choose the right solution for your mouth?
Luckily our team of experts can help you choose and maintain the very best denture solutions, ensuring you can have a happy mouth for many years to come.

Why do I need to get my dentures checked every few years?

A new set of dentures will not last you forever and, the longer you wear one set, the more likely it is that your mouth will change shape and start to look less attractive. This occurs as the bone in your jaw starts to be reabsorbed slowly into your body. This provides a less stable foundation for the dentures, while the conditions can cause your face to change shape, shortening the muscles in your jaw, making it more difficult to open your mouth fully. At Smiles on Broadway, we recommend that all our clients using dentures come in for realignment after two years, with a fitting for a new pair every five to seven years. This should help minimise changes to the shape of your face and maximise the level of comfort.

What kinds of dentures are there?

There are several kinds of denture solutions available and, at Smiles on Broadway, we are pleased to be able to offer them to our clients. From strong and durable metal cobalt chrome dentures, to their more usual acrylic counterparts – or even the latest ‘unbreakable’ Valplast dentures – there is a solution that’s perfect for every mouth.

    Acrylic dentures

The cheapest option, acrylic dentures are also easily adaptable, allowing replacement teeth to be added to the set as required. However, they are very brittle and tend to break. They often feel a little more cumbersome in the mouth too and need to be relined regularly to help ensure they fit properly.

    Metal dentures

Metal dentures are slightly more expensive, but do have numerous advantages over alternative options. They are stronger, less noticeable in the mouth and require less relining than acrylic dentures. They are also attached directly to the teeth, making them extremely stable. In addition, most metal dentures are now cast in chrome cobalt, which can be used very thinly with no loss in strength.

    Valplast dentures

Valplast is a nylon-like material that is ideal for dentures. It is almost unbreakable, strong and very light. In addition, it is also very stable, providing the perfect base for replacement teeth.
